Let’s face it — it’s never easy burying a pet. A new biodegradable innovation developed by PawPods, however, makes the task a bit easier for those who are environmentally-conscious.
PawPods are pet caskets made of bamboo powder, corn starch and risk husks. In addition to being pleasing to look at, they are designed to fully break down in three to five years. Most notably, the caskets are sturdy, as the CEO of PawPods, Ben Riggan, didn’t want the caskets to be flimsy like other varieties on the market.
Riggan was inspired to create PawPods after a tragic experience putting down a cherished dog. TreeHugger reports that Riggan was given his pet’s body in what he called a “glorified plastic bag.” The experience bothered him so much, he decided to create an alternative that pet owners can feel comfortable with, as well as good about as a consumer. On his website, Riggan says: “I decided to create a company to provide a better way for pets to come home, whether they will be buried or cremated.”
The caskets were designed plain so families can decorate them as part of a grieving process. Riggan hopes the task of designing them with markers and pens proves therapeutic for most pet owners.
The company is presently selling two $39.99 urns. One is in the shape of a heart, whereas the other is traditionally shaped. Each is designed to hold ashes and will biodegrade as the pods do. Alternatively, the caskets can be displayed in one’s household. To give back to the environment, each casket is sold with a seeded sympathy card that can be buried in place of an urn if the family decides.
