These Are The Top 25 Most Hacked Passwords of 2017
By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory
If the world lost power tomorrow, the majority of citizens in developing nations wouldn’t know how to cope. This is because society, for the most part, is incredibly dependent on technology — not just to ensure basic needs are met, but for entertainment.
Let’s say that scenario didn’t happen tomorrow. Rather, 25 percent of the population’s social media and email accounts were hacked. Without access to these vital portals of information, a similar frenzy would still break out. That’s kind of the point we seek to make here.
Fortunately, each and every one of us can take care to frequently update passwords. This will prevent hackers from stealing identities and creating other mayhem. Knowing the most hacked passwords will help you determine the best ones you should use, which is why we’re sharing the following list, compiled by SplashData.
Each December, for the past seven years, the security applications and service provider has published a list of the most frequently hacked passwords of the year. Sadly, the results are very predictable.
As IFLScience reports, year after year, millions of people continue to use one simple word or combination of numbers to keep their private information “safe.” Using over 5 million hijacked passwords that were made public over the past 12 months, SplashData determined which ones are hacked the most often.
Intriguingly, the majority of hackings occur in North America and Western Europe. Many of the passwords were standard (“123123”, “Password”, “admin”, etc…) while others were more cyclical (“trustno1” made #25 this year).
Hopefully, this list will encourage people to craft complicated passwords to keep their data secure. The 25 most hacked passwords of 2017 follow:
