Very soon, a new-and-improved version of the beloved Volkswagen Microbus will be available. This time around, however, it will be electric and it will have a driving range of about 300 miles.
In June, Auto Express spoke with VW CEO Herbert Diess, who confirmed that the Microbus is definitely in VW’s future production plans. The vehicle, which inspires nostalgia for the 1960s, will have an electric powertrain to make it as eco-friendly as possible. “Emotional cars are very important for the brand,” said Diess. “We are selling loads of Beetles still, particularly in US markets. But we will also have the Microbus that we showed, which we have recently decided we will build.”
As Inhabitat reports, the Microbus is expected to be based on the new MEB platform that is intended to be the basis for all of Volkswagen’s new electric models. Though it will be similar in style to the I.D. Buzz concept debuted earlier this year, the VW Microbus will remain unique.
Reportedly, Design Boss for Volkswagen, Oliver Stefani, hinted at the idea of a new Microbus. He said, “With the MEB platform this is the chance now to get the proportions back. But you can also get much more interior space, almost one class higher.”
While it is official that the Microbus is coming back, we still don’t know when. Some estimate that the upgraded Microbus will debut after 2020, when the new MEB platform arrives.
