The City Of Seattle Plans To Removes $3 Billion From Wells Fargo In Protest To The Atrocities At Standing Rock

Turns out revolutionary acts can have a big impact not just on an individual level, but even spreading out to whole cities. It was announced yesterday in an article from Indian Country Today Media Network that the city of Seattle are attempting to cut ties with Wells Fargo bank due to their support of Energy Transfer Partners the company that is responsible for the atrocities at Standing Rock in which they are attempting to lay oil pipes on sacred and private indigenous land.

We called for this action in a recent campaign we put together in partnership with the Conscious Media Coalition which you can view in the video below. But this is beyond anything we expected to happen in this kind of time frame.\

The article explained-

“On Monday, December 12, the Seattle City Council introduced legislation that would effectively sever the city’s relationship with Wells Fargo. The bank currently manages the city’s $3 billion operating account, which includes the $30 million biweekly employee payroll.”

It continued “Under the proposed legislation the city’s current contract with Wells Fargo, which ends in one year, on December 31, 2017, would not be renewed. In the meantime, the city would “enter into a voluntary debarment agreement with Wells Fargo Bank for a period of at least one year, and refrain from conducting banking, investment, or other business with Wells Fargo Bank for a period of at least one year when it is in the City’s discretion.”

This basically means the bill could potentially stop all business with Wells Fargo for the next year, by which time the current contract they hole will be void.

The legislation was put forward by Socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant. During a City Council meeting on Monday she had this to say about the the water protectors at Standing Rock.

“They have withstood blizzards, police repression and attacks from private militarized security forces. They have been bitten by attack dogs, pepper-sprayed, subjected to mass arrests, including for praying. But they have courageously stood strong and shown that when we build organized movements willing to fight, we can win. Elected officials nationwide owe it to the activists to stand with them. One clear way this City Council can do that is by divesting the city of Seattle from Wells Fargo, which also happens to be one of the principal financial backers of the Dakota Access pipeline.”
