George Floyd’s Daughter: ‘Daddy Changed The World’

Video footage has emerged of George Floyd’s six-year-old daughter, Gianna, saying that her “Daddy changed the world.”

Gianna is seen sitting upon the shoulders of former NBA star Stephen Jackson, who was good friends with George Floyd.

Floyd’s shocking killing by a Minneapolis policeman has sparked off protests across America and all over the world.

The video of Gianna Floyd has been widely shared on social media after it was posted on Twitter by Bernice A. King. She is the youngest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr King was shot on a hotel balcony in 1968 at the age of 39. At the time Bernice was just five years old.

As King’s death did, Floyd’s death has galvanized African American communities to protest against centuries of oppression. George Floyd was 46-years-old and unarmed when he was suffocated for over eight minutes at a traffic intersection.

“Nobody knows her burden and pride like you,” Bernice said in her tweet.

“I was five years old when my father was killed by law enforcement, I know that pain, I know that void, I know the journey of anger, I know what people are feeling. I feel it,” she added in a later statement.

“He will never see her grow up, graduate, walk down the aisle”

Gianna’s mother Roxie Washington, revealed that she had not fully explained to her daughter how her father died.

‘I told her her dad died because he couldn’t breathe,’ she said.

“At the end of the day, they [the police officers] get to go home and be with their families. Gianna does not have a father,” an emotional Roxie also said.

“Gianna does not have a father,” she added. “He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If there’s a problem she’s having and she needs a dad, she does not have that anymore.”

Gianna was also present at the conference and at one point, she says: “I know what I want to be when I grow up. I want to be a doctor. I want to take care of people.”

George Floyd’s murder certainly has changed the world; even in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, his story and the resultant protests have dominated headlines across the globe. His death came shortly after yet another racially motivated killing, that of Ahmaud Arbery, who was gunned down while out jogging.

It’s tragically highlighted that even in 2020, not a lot has changed in terms of institutionalized racism since Martin Luther King’s assassination more than 50-years ago.
