“Cash Grab” Ensues After Armored Truck Spills $175,000 Onto Busy Highway

The week, commuters driving on Atlanta’s Interstate 285 had the good fortune of driving through a “cash storm,” after the doors of an armored truck swung open, sending cash flying all over the highway. As soon as the truck broke open, motorists began pulling to the side of the road and running out onto the highway to gather as much cash as they could.

The company that operates the armored truck estimated that roughly $175,000 was lost in the incident, and now the Dunwoody Police Department is urging people to return the funds.

“The armored car crew said the side door came open while they were driving and money spilled out onto 285. Officers and the truck crew gathered a few hundred dollars that was still there when officers arrived, but plenty was taken,” Dunwoody Police said in a statement.

Sgt. Robert Parsons, a spokesman for the Dunwoody Police Department told WTKR that they were looking through evidence on social media to identify the drivers who stopped to pick up the money.

“We have plenty of social media video, some of which seems to have tag numbers, to follow up on, but we really want people to come in, turn in the money and go on about their life without worrying about when the police are coming to find them,” Parsons said.

“If the money is turned in, we will not criminally charge those who do the right thing,” he added.

Drivers who did pull over to pick up cash but don’t come forward to turn it in will be facing charges that include theft of lost or mislaid property, which could be a felony or misdemeanor, depending on how much was taken.

For the rest of the day, residents from all over the highway were rushing to that section of the highway, long after all of the cash was already scavenged.

“We have received reports off and on all day about cars blocking the roadway searching for money on I-285. THERE IS NO MORE MONEY! Please stop,” a Facebook post from the police department said.

A few Good Samaritans have returned money that they picked up, but Parsons says that there is still a lot of money on the streets.

“There is still a lot of money out there. We are waiting for more people to just come through the door with it but it hasn’t happened yet,” Parsons told The New York Post.
