Though artificial intelligence (AI) technology is primarily being developed to expand on present inventions, some designers are creating AI robots to offer entertainment and joy to passerbys. Such is how an adorable AI-powered robot came to be, which spends its days scribbling poems in the sand.
As PSFK reports, the battery-powered robot was designed by Yuxi Liu for her Design Informatics thesis at the University of Edinburgh. The cube-shaped robot treks around on four wheels and uses its locater to autonomously cruise over the sand. Using an anemometer (a device which measures wind speed) as an antenna, the robot assess different environmental factors which are then recorded into its data stream.
Using artificial intelligence technology, the robot then pieces together the data to create verses of poetry which is inscribed in the sand by driving. As Inhabitat points out, the robot’s vocabulary is programmed, therefore, general grammar and spelling conventions are used. However, the prose is the robot’s own and it is free to create in any way it pleases.
The Poet on the Shore installation is part of a series Liu has created called “I, Machine.” She seeks to explore the “sense, sociability and morality of machines.”
According to Liu, the robot “enjoys watching the sea, listening to the sound of waves lapping on the beach, the murmurs of the winds, children’s conversing, and the incessant din of seabirds. Most of the time, it roams alone to listen and feel. Sometimes, it writes verses into the sand, and watches the waves wash them away.”
