The US is home to 2,266,000 prisoners, which is higher than the population of Las Vegas, Sacramento, Atlanta and Miami combined. It also makes them the most incarcerated nation on the planet.
What is shocking and scary is that the population has grown by 700% since the start of privatisation. Meaning that as people have started to profit from the imprisonment of their citizens, they have started to enforce harsher sentences.
While prisons are needed for housing violent and dangerous members of society, people who have committed non-violent minor crimes are also being imprisoned alongside the most notorious criminals in the country. And even with the legalisation of marijuana across a lot of the states, there are still people serving harsh sentences for having small amounts of this herb on them in the past.
Although the US make up just 5% of the global population they are home to a quarter of the world’s prisoners and in this thought provoking video report from Truth Loaders Laura Mackenzie we explore the criminal enterprise that is the United States prisons for profit.
