At first glance, Jack Reynolds looks like any other grandfatherly old man, settled into peaceful retirement with his family all the way down to his great-great-grandchildren. But there’s a lot more to this 106 year old pensioner from Derbyshire than meets the eye. Beneath his unassuming exterior, Reynolds is actually quite the daredevil and his list of achievements is mind-blowing.
In 2014, when he was only 102, Reynolds, wearing only his Union Flag underpants, became maybe the oldest person to take part in the ice bucket challenge which aimed to spread awareness and raise funds for researching amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS as it is better known. He even had a drink of whiskey after it to celebrate. The best part is, he didn’t just stop there.
They say it is never too late to follow your dreams and Jack Reynolds seems to be a firm believer in that statement. When he turned 104, he broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to get their first tattoo. This turned out to be the first step into what has so far become a hat trick.
After getting himself a tattoo, on his 105th birthday, Reynolds broke another Guinness World Record. By riding the Twistosaurus ride at the Flamingo Land Theme Park in North Yorkshire, he became the oldest person to ride on a non-inversion rollercoaster.
By this time, he had made it a tradition to do exciting things on his birthdays and this brings us to his latest achievement. On 6th March, 2018, he decided to go on an even more thrilling adventure for his 106th birthday. That Friday morning, Jack Reynolds arrived at GoApe in Grizedale, Cumbria, UK along with his family who have supported him in all his ideas so far. He went on to ride the 197 ft high and 1312 ft long zip line and as you can see from the video below, he had a really good time throughout. Amidst all the adrenaline and excitement Reynolds also broke the Guiness World Record for the oldest person to ride a zip line. When asked about his wild ride, he simply gave a thumbs up said that it speaks for itself. He went on to say that he’d had a lovely day and the travel had been worth it.
In his old age, he decided to try and raise money for worthy causes. Accordingly, Reynolds has used his fame and publicity to spread awareness on different issues. All the funds he’s raised through his achievements have been donated to different charities. This year he raised money for the Stroke Association. He’s the hero of his family and Jayne, his daughter, is keeping up with the tradition of using her birthdays to do some good for the world.
Jack Reynolds teaches all of us that you’re never too old to help make the world a better place and he’s also made up his mind to make the process as adventurous and as fun as he can. Here’s to Jack and whatever exciting adventure he’s planned for his 107th birthday!
