Cows are highly intelligent animals with the ability to feel a full range of emotions, with great memories. Research from animal behaviorists have found that cows interact in socially complex ways, developing long term friendship and that they even have the ability to hold grudges against cows who have mistreated them.
Given the complexity of these creature it is hard to justify the way they are treated. Every year, millions of calves are taken from their mothers and sent to the slaughter house. Cows are often confined to abysmal conditions, fed an unnatural diet and loaded up with growth hormones and antibiotics which destroy their immune systems.
Even if you don’t buy into animals having feelings, there is a climate issue with-
Livestock and their byproducts accounting for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
Goodland, R Anhang, J. “Livestock and Climate Change: What if the key actors in climate change were pigs, chickens and cows?”
Agriculture being responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption. [xv]
Livestock covering 45% of the earth’s total land.
So no matter how you dress it up, it is hard to justify the continued mistreatment of these animals, so we can live in luxury.
But just in case you are not sold, maybe this heart wrenching video of Karma the cow being reunited with her calf will help you to see that cows do truly feel and the way we treat them is unacceptable!
