If you have read any of my articles in the past eg 5 Ways To Be Fucking Courageous you will know that swearing doesn’t offend me all that much. I still think there is a line and at times swearing when there is really no need can be offensive and a little rude. However there are a million other things in the world that are far more offensive and if you are partial to the odd swear word, don’t worry science has your back!
A recent study has been published by Language Sciences, which included 43 participants in their late teens to early twenties. They compared their general vocabulary and their knowledge of taboo words.
The results showed that those who listed a lot of words also tended to be able to name more “dirty words.” and also found a positive relationship between taboo fluency and neurotic and open personality traits.
The swear words that topped the test where “fuck” “shit” and “bitch”(in case you are curious) and there was a total of 400 different swear words, which included some highly thoughtful concoctions such as “ass pirate,” “cockass,” and “pissant.”
Just to add the main finding of the study was that of the “fluency-is-fluency“ hypothesis. This idea in a nutshell is that your fluency with words is universal across the board, meaning if your vocabulary flows it will flow with general vocabulary, nouns or profanities. It doesn’t mean that unnecessary swearing will make you a genius.
