Salvador Dalí’s Tarot Artwork From 1970s Released As Full Deck
In the early 1970’s, the famous artist Salvador Dalí designed a deck of tarot cards for the James Bond film “Live and Let Die,” starring Roger Moore and Jane Seymour. The deck was initially expected to be featured in the film, but the cards didn’t actually end up appearing in the final cut as planned because the studio was not willing to pay the price that the artist was charging to have his work in a major film. It is not clear exactly what that price was, or why the negotiations deteriorated. However, he continued to work on the project and eventually released a finished version of the tarot cards about a decade later, in 1984.
The cards are scheduled to be re-released by the art book publisher Taschen in April of 2020, and they will be issued along with an instructional book that was also made by Dalí. Most tarot card decks have an accompanying booklet, but this one will hopefully feature some more rare artwork.
According to the website where the cards are being sold, “Dalí poses as the Magician, his wife Gala becomes the Empress, and the death of Julius Caesar is reinterpreted as the Ten of Swords in the artist’s extraordinary custom tarot deck. First published in a 1984 limited edition that has since long sold out, this lush box set brings back all 78 cards, each dazzling in color, along with a companion book on the making-of and practical instructions.”
The deck is available for pre-order and is selling for $60. The deck will presumably work just like any other tarot deck, just featuring rare artwork from the legendary surrealist.
