One of the contributors to mankind’s ails is not spending enough time outdoors, where there is an abundance of oxygen to breathe. Inside, stuffy air does little to support good health. Aware of this, designer-engineer and biochemical technology researcher Julian Melchiorri developed a “living lamp” that can improve the air quality — and the lighting — of a room.
Inhabitat reports that Melchiorri was inspired to design the lamp after researching “artificial leaf” technology, which harnesses the natural power of photosynthesis and turns CO2 into oxygen. This is the first of the Melchiorri’s designs to implement the concept — but it most certainly won’t be the last. The designer hopes to one day use the technology on a wide variety of building and objects so cleaner air may be a reality for all of us.
The piece below is called Exhale, and it is made from 70 algae-filled artificial leaves. It gives off a warm, green glow and, of course, releases oxygen into the air. According to Melchiorri, the lamp is suitable both indoors and outdoors. Basically, wherever a cleaner, greener environment is required.
While the living lamp is only a prototype at the moment, it is expected to hit markets in the near future. Following are photographs of the innovative, eco-friendly decor:
