A bomb with the equivalent force of 11 tons of TNT has just been dropped in Afghanistan reports CBS. The target- a cave complex which according to the Pentagon thought to be in use by Islamic militants.
The bomb which is named “GBU-43 “or “Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB)”, also has the nickname the “mother of all bombs.” It has a weight of over 21,000 lbs., and is the biggest non-nuclear bomb to have been used in combat.
President Trump has said it was “another very, very successful mission.” and when questioned if he authorised the strike he responded “everybody knows exactly what happened.” he continued “What I do is I authorize my military,” “We have the greatest military in the world and they’ve done their job as usual. So, we have given them total authorization and that’s what they’re doing.”
It is not clear what the cost of civilian life has been, but in a statement, the U.S. command in Afghanistan said officials “took every precaution to avoid civilian casualties with this strike”
Last month civilian casualties linked to U.S. strikes in Syria and Iraq are thought to have been close to 1,500. With more civilian life being lost in the first three months of 2017, than the whole of 2016. With these attacks now happening in Afghanistan and the threat of war with North Korea we can only see the death toll rising.
