It’s January 2018 and most of us have set goals to kickstart our year. It’s easy to set goals but it’s much harder to stay motivated to achieve them. According to a study from the University of Scranton, only 8% of people who make a New Year’s resolution are able to follow through. If you want to stick to your New Year’s resolution this year, it is important that you are intentional about your behaviours, only then will you have the inner-drive to stay on the right path.
Be Specific & Make It A Challenge
What do you want to achieve this year? Is your goal specific, or broad and general? A study published in the American Psychological Association revealed that people who set goals are that are both specific and challenging are 90% more likely to achieve it. If you set a goal that is realistic and measurable you are likely to find the motivation to see it through.
When you have control over what you are doing it makes you more motivated to continue to do it. If you set a goal that you have complete autonomy over, you are more likely to work hard for a successful result.
If you have set a long-term goal make sure you have put checkpoints in place so that you can monitor your progress. Though it may seem like you are far away from completing your overall goal, celebrating these tiny wins will give you a much needed daily dose of motivation.
In order to stay motivated you need to hold yourself accountable. A study which focused on strategies for achieving goals and resolutions found that 70% of individuals who sent a weekly update to a friend were successful in meeting their achievements, compared to the 30% who that did not.
