This has put a spotlight on ‘wet markets’ – where a vast array of wild animals are sold as food for humans.

China’s cruel practice of eating dogs and cats has also being brought back into focus.

Hamilton is as an avid animal lover and his Instagram profile reads:

“🌱 [Plant emoji] Based Diet. Love Animals. Constantly searching for my purpose, for adventure, open-mindedness and positivity…Spread LOVE and God above all.”

He recently spent time at WIRES – a program helping with the rehabilitation of animals affected by Australia’s wildfires.

Now the Brit is hoping to use his popularity in China to change peoples’ thinking.

He posted an Instagram story to share a image from the ‘Little China Dog Rescue’, and added a message of his own.

“To all my fans in China. I’d be so grateful if you could vote and push for this. This has to stop.”

Hamilton has more than 15 million followers on Twitter.

Companion animals

The Humane Society International (HSI) claims that as many as 30 million dogs are killed in Asia for meat each year.

But it seems at least as if Chinese authorities are beginning to call for change.

Shenzhen recently became the first city on Mainland China to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat.
