Actor and film producer Tyler Perry has been surprising elderly shoppers in Kroger and Winn-Dixie stores by paying for their groceries.

Signing himself off as the ‘Atlanta Angel’, Perry has reached into his own wallet to help out elderly shoppers in Atlanta and Louisiana.

Specifically, he’s been financially assisting senior citizens out shopping during the hour or two per day allocated exclusively by some stores to people over the age of 60.

It’s people in this age bracket who are most at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

And some of those folk – at 44 Kroger stores across Atlanta and 29 Winn-Dixie stores in Louisiana, have had their day brightened by the appearance of the ‘Atlanta Angel’ as he arrived at checkouts to take care of the bill.

“We would like to join our customers in thanking Mr. Perry for his kindness and generosity during this unprecedented pandemic. It was truly a pleasure to see our customers fill with joy and gratitude as the news spread throughout 44 stores across Metro Atlanta,” said Felix Turner, a senior manager for Kroger’s Atlanta division.

Winn-Dixie also thanked the movie star, via a Twitter post, paying tribute to him for “paying it forward by purchasing groceries for elderly and high-risk [Winn-Dixie] customers shopping at Louisiana stores this morning.

“Winn-Dixie applauds your love for community and sincere generosity,” the store added.

$500 tips all round

Perry’s kindness has also extended in other ways. At Houston’s restaurant in Atlanta, he gave away $21,000 after tipping each of the restaurant’s out-of-work employees $500.

The 50-year-old Louisiana-born Perry has enjoyed a hugely successful career as an actor, director, producer and writer of numerous movies, television shows and stage productions.

Tyler Perry’s House of Payne is one of his most well-known television programs. In 2012, he entered into a multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey’s Oprah Winfrey Network. He’s also famous for creating and performing the Madea character, ‘a tough elderly black woman’.

In 2011, Forbes named him as the highest-paid person in entertainment, with earnings of around US$130 million between May 2010 and May 2011.
