Update: In response to the activism against the practice, Sephora has now stopped sourcing their products from these mink farms.

Fake eyelashes are a huge business, and many of the most popular brands use fur from minks to make them. Many of these brands, sold at retailers like Sephora, claim that their products are “cruelty-free.” “ethically sourced,” or  “free-range,” but animal rights groups like PETA say that there is no such thing as cruelty-free mink fur.

Animals like minks are instinctively territorial, which makes a “free-range” mink farm a bit of an impossibility. They can also become very aggressive when they feel threatened, so they would need to be caged in order for their fur to be harvested. In many places, like Europe, minks are now endangered, mostly due to overhunting and loss of habitat.

The European mink is listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered due to an ongoing reduction in numbers, having been calculated as declining more than 50% over the past three generations and expected to decline at a rate exceeding 80% over the next three generations.

According to animal rights investigators, animals trapped on fur farms are violently killed on a regular basis. They’re electrocuted, bludgeoned, or gassed, or their necks are broken, and their skins are torn from their bodies while they’re still conscious. Investigators with PETA have said that gas chambers are used on many of these mink farms to kill the animals so their fur can be harvested.

Undercover footage taken from fur farms shows the animals in tiny wire cages, where they are abused and denied adequate food, water, and medical care. It is not clear which company is responsible for the mink farm in the footage below, but according to animal rights activists, these conditions are an industry standard.

The following brands, most of which are carried at Sephora, are known to sell cruelly obtained fake eyelashes:

Cosmetic Laser Clinic
Flirty Lashes
Klepki Lashes
Lash Bar Australia
Lash House
The Lash Store
MINK MINK
Velour Lashes by Redefining Beauty

There are a few brands out there that are actually vegan and cruelty-free. These brands include the following:
