It’s a year since Greta Thunberg evoked the world’s attention with her fight that managed to turn the spotlight on the dangers wrought by uncontrolled climate change. She also attacked the culpability of the politicians who by their acts of both commission and omission have further exposed the planet and its citizens to the serious effects of this change.
The whole world, especially its youth have risen as one to rally behind Greta Thunberg. It is through Global Climate Strike that the international community has been raising the urgent need for everyone to participate in achieving the desired turnaround, even making the passive awareness of the consequences of climate change.
Thousands from across the world got together on September 20, 2019, for numerous global strikes. It preceded the international gathering of world leaders at the Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23, 2019, where they discussed the ways to control greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.
The participants gave free rein to their imagination to draw attention to their problems. Many were using the strike as a means to reach out to the maximum number of people. Others used their creativity and talent to express their feelings. Here’s a peek at some of the best.
In one of the strikes, Greta Thunberg reminded the strikers that the world leaders would be present at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York City. Even as the world watched with growing interest, it was a great chance for the leaders to finally demonstrate that they were committed to the change, that they believed in what the scientists were saying all along and were ready to act upon it. The youth of the world were ready to rally behind her and make the world leaders aware. And this time around they wanted actions, not empty words.
The global initiative had one pertinent message for those who still choose to doubt that there is a crisis. Even as the planet is engulfed by a climatic inferno, the world leaders have remained at the sidelines. Meanwhile, the major power companies continue to plunder the world’s resources and add to the crisis, while the lives of millions continue to be at stake.
The organizers of the Global Climate Strike are encouraging people to contribute to the cause. They reminded people that they were part of the same planet and we’re in as much danger as anyone.
If the transition to 100% renewable energy was delayed, we would have crossed the tipping point, the point of no return. But all this would only succeed only when the whole world participated. Revolutions do not happen in isolation.
