Hidden Camera Catches Cat Comforting Anxious Dog While Family’s Away [Video]

For many dogs, the absence of their owner(s) can cause them to feel anxious and unsettled. Fortunately for a sweet-natured pup named Joule, she has the support of a feline companion named Kelvin. As hidden cameras reveal, the orange tabby often comforts the anxious dog when the family is away.

According to Brenna Eckert, Joule was a nervous dog from the beginning. But since they adopted her four years ago, her anxiety has slightly improved.

“Joule had a lot of anxiety when we first adopted her,” Eckert told The Dodo. “We worked one-on-one with a dog behaviorist to help work through some of her issues.”

“She is certainly a velcro dog,” Eckert added. “When we are home she always needs to be close to us.”

Not long after Joule joined the family, Eckert adopted Kelvin, an orange tabby kitten. From the beginning, the pair got along great. 

“The animal shelters had given each of them a temporary name before we adopted them,” Eckert said. “Kelvin’s shelter name was Socks and Joule’s shelter name was Sandals. How ironic that Socks and Sandals make such a great pair!”

Eckert never suspected how deep that bond was, however. That changed when one day, she set up security cameras around the house to monitor things while she was at work. After watching the footage, Eckert was delighted to discover that her easy-going cat often comforted her high-strung dog — not just for a moment, but for the entire day.

“We noticed that Kelvin and Joule were laying on the couch together almost every day,” Eckert said. “I moved the camera to get a closer view of the couch and was amazed to see that they weren’t just sharing the couch, but they were snuggling up against each other.”

Touched by their companionship, Eckert posted the video to Reddit with the comment: “This happens literally every weekday for the full 8 hours we’re gone.”

Joule isn’t the only one who benefits from the snuggling. Kelvin can become lonely when the family is away, too. “Kelvin’s personality is very mellow and sweet,” Eckert explained. “He loves sleeping and being warm, both of which he gets by snuggling up to Joule during the day.”

If Eckert hadn’t installed the cameras, she never would have known about the animals’ unique relationship. “They only snuggle with each other like this when we are not around,” Eckert said. “If we are home, Joule wants to be with us, so she basically ignores the cat.” The only exception, it seems, is when the entire family cuddles together on the couch.
