Now that we have your attention, it would be wise to say that this isn’t the only factor that contributes to such sexual kinks. But, it might be one of them. Research conducted in Slovakia and the Czech Republic found that, amongst 36000 people, most were into it. And interestingly, all were cat owners. It is said that they were aroused by the feeling of danger, or something illicit, forbidden.

The reason is a tiny parasite called Toxoplasma Gondii that shouldn’t really affect the way your mind works until you are a mouse and a suitable prey for the cat. How it works is that the mouse loses its sense of survival and walks right into the mouth of death, and gets eaten up. The disease is called Toxoplasmosis. It gets transferred to the cat and in its stomach, it reproduces. Finally, the cat defecates the parasite due to which between 10 and 20 million oocysts or the parasite’s eggs are deposited in the soil. These eggs stay in the soil for years, until they are consumed by another animal.

While such a parasite is usually not a threat to humankind unless you have a compromised immune system or are pregnant, it does point towards schizophrenia. It has been reported in several studies that the presence of such a parasite in the human body can lead to an increase in accidents, or reacting to cat odour. One further study talked about how schizophrenia and toxoplasma infection were related. Schizophrenia led to the pumping of a lot of dopamine to the brain, while the infection led to the growth of cysts, which could trigger the increase of dopamine production.

The CDC has also noted that people infected with this parasite rarely displayed any symptoms as compared to those with pregnancy and/or are immunocompromised. The parasite Toxoplasma can get really dangerous for those people.

While these findings did divulge us from the original topic at hand, researchers are always unanimous when it comes to the link between sexual kinks and Toxoplasma. As has been mentioned by them, Toxoplasma plays a very short, variable role in BDSM associated traits. One way to find out would be to check the infection rate between people into bondage, and people not into it. As reported by the CDC, humans above the age of 6 have around 11% of the infected, but in many areas in the world, the rate is as high as 60%.

According to lead author, Jaroslav Flegr, humans have a relationship with fear and sex. Toxoplasma can deactivate parts of the fear mechanism, making you enter your kinky side.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?
