Selfies have been the craze for quite some time now. The human need for narcissism is uncontrollable, and it has been estimated that at least a million selfies are clicked each day. Now, while capturing photos and memories are fine, sometimes they tend to go to the extreme.

Pictures are a source of memory. We go somewhere, we click a picture. We see some beautiful scenery, we click a picture. We find ourselves looking drop dead gorgeous, we snap a picture. But clicking a thousand pictures of yourself over a course of a week is also ridiculous. For not only does it show vanity and narcissism, it also shows a detachment from reality, and a desperate need for validation.

In this Selfie crazed world, it would be unwise to assume that everyone loves clicking pictures. For there is one, Stephanie Leigh Rose, who hates selfies to the point that she takes pictures of her pretending to be dead.

Now, that might sound creepy. But the reasoning behind is actually pretty sensible. She believes that people collecting memories tend to forget about their own mortality. The fact that everything is passing, and nothing really stays forever, even if they are taken in a multitude of pictures. This is precisely why anyone who visits her Instagram page would find it quite eerie. Her posts are usually her lying like a dead body before a famous monument. Or a lake, or any historical or geographical place of interest.

With the caption of ‘STEFDIES’, she is usually seen lying face down before a place, and the picture is uploaded without any filters or the like. And this is what her revolt has been about- the increase in heart signs, and peace signs, and all those ‘fake candids’, with their premeditated smiles. She wants to show reality as it truly is, without any farce. According to her, the images are not planned, they are just as shot as the moment comes into play.

Her way of selfies has also been about spreading awareness on the cons of selfies. From deaths, to depression, selfies haven’t all been a sunkissed filter. The case of Danny Bowman comes to mind- a school kid who locked himself up in a room and clicked 200 pictures a day to get the perfect selfie. All it resulted in was him becoming suicidal. There have been news of couples dying while clicking their perfect selfies at risky locations.

Young, or old, people get affected with/by selfies. While most people, who are quite old, would stay obstinately away from this ridicule, young people love it. They are quite unaware that it could really develop unhealthy body standards too.

Anyway, people should be reminded of the dangers that come with selfies. Just because you want to click a selfie standing on the top-most roof of Burj Khalifa, doesn’t mean you have to do it.

Selfies are a way to keep memories. See to it that you don’t turn into a memory yourself.
