Every now and again, we are shown a glimpse of just how powerful and mighty nature is. Thanks to photographer Douglas Craft and whale watcher Kate Cummings, the entire world can marvel over astonishing footage of a humpback whale breaching the waters in Monterey Bay, California.
As Bored Panda reports, the bay is home to many species of marine mammals. It is also on the migratory path of Gray and Humpback whales. As a result, it is a popular whale watching spot.
In late April, a salmon fisherman of the boat Baja Sueno had the surprise of his life when a humpback whale made a nearby breach. “The whale is huge! If I’d been the fisherman, I’d probably need some new underwear,” said Cummings.
The one-of-a-kind breach was also documented by Craft. From the porthole of another boat, he took photographs from an upward angle. As a result, the humpback whale looks even bigger. “I went below deck to shoot from a porthole close to the water line. That’s what gives this amazing perspective of looking up at the whale,” Douglas said.
Cummings suspected the whale would breach near the fisherman’s boat — and she was right!
“It was fun capturing this video. The whale had already breached multiple times much further away from the fisherman,” said the photographer. “But sometimes when whales breach multiple times, they’re also heading a specific direction when they’re underwater building momentum for the next breach. I figured the next breach would be around the fisherman because the whale was heading that way and sure enough! Though I didn’t expect the whale and the boat to line up so perfectly.”
The whale’s size makes the boat look insignificant and tiny. Considering an adult humpback whale weighs around 25-30 metric tons (28-33 short tons) and can grow up to 52 feet in length, this should be no surprise.
