After Finding $17,000 Outside Of Food Bank, Homeless Man Turns It In To Help Others

Oftentimes, when someone is down on their luck, their only thought is of winning a bundle of money. But, this wasn’t the case for Kevin Booth, a homeless man in Tacoma, Washington. After finding $17,000 in cash in front of a local food bank, Booth decided to turn it in versus reward himself.

GoodNewsNetwork reports that Booth had stopped by his local food bank for a meal early one August morning. He recalled that the Sumner Food Bank often leaves baked goods in front outside for people to take when the facility is closed.

As he neared the establishment’s front doors, he saw a brown paper bag sitting outside the locked entrance. Booth thought it held food, so he looked inside. To his surprise, he discovered that it contained stacks of $20 bills. Later, it was determined that the bag contained $17,000 in cash.

The money could have dramatically improved Booth’s situation, but he knew it would serve more people if it was donated to the food bank. So, the good Samaritan waited until volunteer Anita Miller arrived to open up the facility. Needless to say, she was stunned.

“There are a lot of people who would have taken it,” Booth told the News Tribune. “I’m just not that person.”

Miller immediately called the police. After a thorough investigation of the security footage, the Sumner Police Department of Washington could not identify who dropped off the package.

After waiting the necessary 90 days for someone to claim the money, the funds were turned over to the food bank. Booth was also honored for his integrity with a portion of the donation in the form of gift cards.

Booth, who lives in a tent in the nearby forest, has turned down offers of shelter. He does accept Miller’s gifts of winter clothes, however. A resident in Tacoma also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Booth to buy him a VW van he dreams of using as a shelter.

Every month, the food bank serves meals to roughly 1,000 people — including Booth. Thanks to the anonymous individual’s donation and Booth’s honesty, thousands of more people will continue to benefit from the life-saving resource.
