In the blink of an eye, the lives of an Eritrean family changed dramatically. One day, the mother and her four children were merely surviving at a refugee camp in Sudan. Then the next, they were being welcomed into the home of Rebecca Davies, a Canadian resident and member of the group Ripple Refugee Project.
Davies empathizes with the plight of refugees, which is why she agreed to host the family until they find permanent housing. During a recent snowfall, she managed to capture heartwarming footage of two of the children experiencing snowfall for the first time. To say they were delighted is an understatement. The video, which was posted to Twitter, has received nearly 4 million views.

As The Guardian reports, Canada is one of the few countries in the world that allows residents to pool their money and resources to help refugees resettle. Between 2015 and 2016, more than 25,000 refugees were welcomed into the North American country. Reportedly, many of the refugees were aided through private sponsorship programs.

Whereas US President Donald Trump is openly hostile toward refugees, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomes them. At one point, he assisted in handing out warm winter coats to refugees arriving at the airport.
On Monday, Trudea re-tweeted Davies’ post with the comment: “Amazing – now convince them that shoveling is fun and you’re all set. Thank you for everything you do, Rebecca. #WelcomeToCanada.”
“We were really touched by the video. We’re very moved. There seemed to be moments of pure joy coming from them,” said Andrew FitzGerald, group member of Ripple Refugee Project. To him, the footage solidifies the importance of sponsoring families.
“If people spent time with these families, they quickly realize these are very good people who are in difficult circumstances and need a hand,” said FitzGerald. “I’m hoping it also makes others ‘rethink their stance’ on the topic of newcomers and immigration.”
