Was Jesus Referring To All Of Humanity When He Said He Was The Son Of God

Jesus was the self proclaimed son of God and the most well know human being that has ever existed. The bible is (debatably) the most published book with between 4 and 6 billion copies being sold over the last 50 years. Regardless of your religious inclinations and beliefs, Jesus has managed to spread his message further than any other person that has ever been.

Many followers of the Christian faith place Jesus upon a pedestal as the one and only son of God, but could it be he was the first to be able to effectively share this message and be believed. In Matthew 5:43-48 Jesus said:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

Note the line “that you may be children of your Father in heaven” saying that we are all God’s children.

John 5:26 “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;” This line could be interpreted as all life created is in the image of God, and so we are all the “sons”.

One thing we must remember is that society was male driven in these days and everything was said as to refer to the man. The father could very well be genderless and the son could be male or female.

Mary Magdalene is a prime example of a woman who was discredited due to being female. In the Bible she is known as a saint, a disciple of Jesus and a witness to both the crucifiction and resurrection of Christ. Both John 20:16 and Mark 16:9 say that Mary was the first witness to Jesus post-resurrection. However, around 591 Pope Gregory spread the idea that Mary was a prostitute, of which there was actually no evidence.  

If a Pope would spread untruths in this way, there could very well be many mistranslations, half truths and twistings of teachings over the years. This is the topic covered in this talk from Alan Watts:
