“What did I do to deserve this,” you think, clutching you fingers as the nerve inside grate against each other. It may feel as if you have reached the end of the rope and no hope is in sight, but don’t despair. There are foods that are scientifically validated to benefit rheumatoid arthritis, and many are found in your local grocery store.

Dr. Bhawna Gupta, Shweta Khanna, and Kumar Sagar Jaiswal worked together at KIIT’s Disease Biology Lab in the School of Biotechnology to narrow down foods proven to ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, as well as slow progression of the disease.

As The Hearty Soul reports, this is the second study to conclude that certain foods may benefit the condition. Only the foods proven to have long-lasting benefits were listed by the researchers. Their findings were grouped into eight categories:

1) Fruit

Dried plums, grapefruits, grapes, blueberries, bananas, pomegranate, mango, peaches, and apples

2) Cereals

Whole oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, whole flattened rice

3) Whole Grains

Wheat*, rice, oats, corn, rye, barley, millets, sorghum, and canary seed

4) Legumes

Black soybean and black gram

5) Spices

Ginger and turmeric

6) Herbs

Sallaki and ashwaganda

7) Oils

Olive oil, fish oil, and borage seed oil

8) Miscellaneous

Yogurt (curd), green tea, and basil (tulsi) tea

*Individuals with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease may want to omit wheat, rye and oats containing gluten from their diets.

By reducing your consumption of nightshade vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes, and consuming more of the foods proven to benefit rheumatoid arthritis, you may find cheap, easy relief. “Supporting disease management through food and diet does not pose any harmful side effects and is relatively cheap and easy,” explained Dr. Gupta.

Let’s not forget that it was Hippocrates, considered to be the “father of modern-day medicine,” that once stated: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food.” Consider taking his advice by consuming more of the foods above if you, or someone you know, suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.
