73 people, 28 men and 45 women between the ages of 50 and 83, were asked to fill out a questionnaire on the regularity of their sex lives. They were then given a verbal and visual aptitude test, assessing their vocabulary and ability to see objects in their mind’s eye. The results showed that, on average, those who were having sex as regularly as once a week performed better in the test than those who were having sex less frequently.

The research was conducted by Coventry and Oxford University. Previous studies comparing the brain function of the sexually active to the celibate yielded similar results, although the frequency with which the sexually active were having sex was not measured. Neither study revealed a link between sexual activity and memory.

This new studies was conducted as part of a larger study to determine whether the link between sex and brain function is biological. Coventry University’s Dr. Hayley Wright said, “We need to look at what impact sex can have on those aged 50 and over”.
