It’s Official: McDonald’s Is Testing A New Vegan Burger

Healthy eating isn’t a trend, it’s a lifestyle. And fortunately, it seems fast food chains such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s are finally catching on to this fact.

There is a clear correlation between the consumption of high-fat, high-sugar, and highly-processed food and diseases of affluence, such as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. For this reason, consumers are choosing to eat predominantly vegetarian and vegan diets at an increasing pace. According to a study published in Vegetarian Times, 3.2% — approximately 7.3 million people — are now vegetarian.

Eating plant-based can be hard when there are few options available, however. And though McDonald’s still can’t be considered a healthy establishment to dine at, we can’t help but applaud the corporation’s initiative by introducing a vegan burger.

Recently, McDonald’s announced its new product — “The McVegan.” The patty is predominantly made of soy and is served with a variety of fresh, vegan toppings (tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc…). From October 4th to November 21st, the McVegan is being tested at a McDonald’s location in Tampere, Finland.

If you’re interested in adopting a plant-based diet, just make sure to skip the fries. McDonald’s fries contain “natural beef flavors” which, yes, are sourced from cows, so they are anything but vegan. However, this initiative is applaudable nonetheless.

Unsurprisingly, the millennial generation seems to be spearheading the plant-based movement. The 2017 Protein Alternatives Report by global market research Mintel says that millennials are most open to meat alternatives; 64 percent have tried meatless burgers, and only 1 in 5 has tried a Big Mac.

Most often, an individual decides to eschew meat for either environmental, health or ethical reasons. Sometimes, the choice is propelled by all three. While we don’t support eating at McDonald’s, as the food is notoriously unhealthy and tastier, whole food options can be made at home, it’s noteworthy how even the Big Arches is introducing plant-based options to try and attract more customers.
