This Map Reveals Which Countries Are The Most ‘Toxic’ In The World

If you’ve ever wondered which countries are responsible for spewing out the most pollutants, look no further. A map created by The Eco Experts reveals the top 10 most “toxic” countries based on data gathered from 135 different nations.

The Eco Experts ranked the countries based on five environmental factors: energy consumption per capita, CO2 emissions from fuel combustion, air pollution levels, deaths attributable to air pollution, and renewable energy production. The results were quite surprising.

As can be viewed below, Middle Eastern countries make up more than half of the list. Saudi Arabia came in at #1. This is because the country is one of the world’s largest oil producers but also has some of the world’s lowest renewable energy contributions. As BusinessInsider points out, this doesn’t have to be the case, as Saudi Arabia has weather conditions ideal for solar energy.

Surprisingly, China did not make the list. This is because the country aims to invest £292 billion in renewable energy by 2020, according to The Guardian. Because China is actively pursuing a greener future, it scored lower on the toxicity rating — despite having abhorrent air pollution levels.

The most toxic European country is Luxembourg, which suffers from heavy pollution from neighboring countries (including Germany and Belgium). The UK ranked 81st for toxicity, and he US fared slightly worse in 66th place.

The least polluting countries were mostly African nations. Kenya, Mozambique and Ethiopia scored the lowest, and this is because lack of industrialization has resulted in less air pollution. Had the study taken water pollution into account (a big problem in Africa), the result would have likely been different.

  3. Qatar
  4. Bahrain
  5. United Arab Emirates
  6. Oman
  7. Turkmenistan
  8. Libya
  9. Kazakhstan
  10. Trinidad and Tobago
