This week is one of natural disasters, most of which have been exacerbated by climate change according to leading scientists. Following Hurricane Harvey which parked in Texas and unleashed 50+ inches of rain, Hurricanes Irma and Jose made themselves present. And less than 24 hours ago in Mexico, the “worst earthquake in a century” left at least 200 people injured and nearly 60 dead.

At 23:50 local time on Thursday (4:50 GMT Friday), the 8.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico. It also triggered a tsunami warning, spurring the evacuation of thousands of people in coastal communities in Chiapas. The warning was later lifted.

The BBC reports that the most affected states were Tabasco, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Said Luis Felipe Puente, the National Emergency Committee’s director: “The National Emergency Committee is currently reporting 58 deaths from the September 7 earthquake.” After the event occurred, a huge rescue operation was launched to save the people trapped under rubble. Officials documented 45 deaths in Oaxaca, 10 in Chiapas and three in Tabasco.

One of the worst hit towns was Juchitán, in Oaxaca, where 17 deaths were reported. Many buildings were badly damaged in the earthquake. Said Juchitán’s Mayor, Gloria Sanches: “The situation is Juchitán is critical; this is the most terrible moment in its history.”

Throughout Friday, the region was hit with aftershocks. President Peña Nieto said he would travel to Chiapas to survey the damage, which is expected to be extensive. The earthquake was more powerful than the 1985 tremor that hit close to Mexico City and resulted in thousands of deaths.

For years, scientists have warned that unsustainable habits which fuel climate change would result more dangerous natural disasters. Concerning the recent hurricanes, this definitely seems to be the case. Said climate scientist Michael Mann at Penn State, “The science is now fairly clear that climate change will make stronger storms stronger.” The storms are also likely to be wetter as a result of increased precipitation and warmer temperatures.
