If you needed any more evidence that cannabis oil, derived from the cannabis plant, is a medicine, read on. An 11-year-old boy named Billy, who became the first patient to be prescribed Cannabidiol (CBD, or cannabis oil), has not had a seizure in 300 days.

His family says Billy used to suffer up to 30 potentially fatal seizures a month due to his epilepsy. He was not responding to medicine or diet treatments, which is why his family started him on cannabis oil, reports The Independent.

Said Billy’s mother, Charlotte: “Billy is doing absolutely incredible, he’s improving every week and making progress. I never anticipated a year ago that he would even be still here today so I’m feeling really good and positive”

GP Dr. Brendan O’Hare prescribed the extract from the marijuana plant, as his case was “unique.” Said O’Hare, “Whatever the rights and wrongs, we had a child who had benefitted and the child’s welfare was paramount. On that basis I issued a prescription. This was not to open the floodgates for others, it is a one-off.”

It is pertinent to note that CBD oil does not contain any THC, the main psychoactive component in the cannabis plant. Additionally, 0 people in the history of the world have died using cannabis — recreationally or medicinally. Finally, cannabis oil has been proven to remedy a variety of different cancers in over 100 peer-reviewed studies. Learn more here.

Though cannabis oil has helped thousands of people reclaim their lives and get off of potentially harmful medications, it is still illegal in many countries worldwide and remains classified as a Schedule I drug in the United States. Hopefully, Billy’s testament will further activists’ efforts to decriminalize marijuana once and for all, so recreational sales may boost local economies and those who need the medicine have access to it.
