North Korea’s Latest Nuclear Test Was ‘Eight Times More Powerful’ Than Hiroshima

As a result of increased tensions between North Korea and the United States, both countries have been strengthening their military forces. A new nuclear test by North Korea within its borders, however, has done little to discourage war.

Recently, North Korea successfully tested a 120 kiloton H-bomb, which was reportedly eight times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during WW2. The test was discovered after a tremor was recorded on the Korean peninsula, which may have triggered the blast.

During WWII, the bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by Americans was about 15 kilotons. The one dropped on Nagasaki was 20 kilotons. The death toll was approximately 150,000 in Hiroshima and 75,000 in Nagasaki. These figures offer a grim glimpse at what might occur should North Korea engage in nuclear warfare.

Metro reports that the accuracy and honesty of the report cannot be confirmed as a result of the conflicting media releases. However, the test comes just a few days after the communist dictatorship launched a ballistic missile over Japan. The event increased fears they could launch a nuclear missile at the country.

If North Korea was to detonate a similar-sized bomb over the Houses of Parliament in London (as an example), the casualties and damage would be catastrophic. The online tool Nukemap offers a disturbing visual:

Buildings inside of the grey circle would collapse due to the blast. In this vicinity, there would be a near 100 percent casualty rate. Anyone within the outer orange circle would suffer serious skin burns. Flammable materials would catch fire, contributing to additional damage. Hundreds of thousands — if not millions — would perish from the bomb.

This reality is one that needs to be acknowledged so educated activists may not only speak out, but engage in change to co-create peace. We are on the precipice of irreversible change and are required to act before it is too late. Human lives and the well-being of the planet are at stake.
