In new scheme, Detroit residents who earn less than $10,000 a year can now live in a tiny home. Cass Community Social Services is a non-profit organisation that has gained increasing popularity for their motivation to fight poverty and create opportunity. Their ‘Tiny Homes Detroit’ program has been set up to house people who were previously homeless, low-income seniors and students who have left foster care. Those who qualify for housing will be able to rent, and then own their tiny home.
Cass Community Social Services bought 25 vacant lots for $15,000 which they are using to build the tiny community. The non-profit organisation have been able to keep costs low by relying on volunteers to build the homes. The size of each home ranges from 250-400 ft (squared) and rent price is set at $1 a month per square foot. So far, 7 out of the 25 homes have been completed and the first few residents are ready to move in.
The Detroit model is one of its kind. It’s the only tiny house community in the country where residents rent to own. Upon moving in, residents will have to sign a one-year lease. The rent will amount to no more than one third of their monthly income. The residents will continue to renew their annual lease for the first three years in the home. If all terms and conditions have been satisfied (i.e. paying rent on time) and the residents have been living in the tiny home for three years – they will be invited to sign a land contract. The contract will amount to the total rent for four subsequent years. Once that is paid off, the resident will own their own home.
Cass Community Social Services affordable approach to housing is challenging the current status quo and giving the most vulnerable members of our society, not only a right to shelter, but a chance to invest and get on the property ladder. The steps that this non-profit organisation have taken to ensure that everyone can live in a home is nothing short of inspiring and the new residents couldn’t be happier.
