BuySmart is a socially-minded startup. Their aim is to build a community of consumers who want to challenge the current economic climate and push for a fairer economy.

The digital platform enables consumers to identify brands that match their values. In addition, BuySmart will also inform consumers about ethical shopping choices and steer them in the direction of independent companies, opposed to big corporations.

BuySmart have partnered up with organisations such as Ethical Consumer, Fair Tax, 38 Degrees, Social Enterprise UK and The Living Wage Foundation. With these brands backing their endeavours, BuySmart hopes it can use collective action to positively influence the way companies behave. They want greater corporate transparency over tax, which will hopefully motivate businesses to improve their supply chain.

BuySmart launched earlier on this month and already has more than 70 independent brands featured on the site. As it stands, people who sign up and becoming members at BuySmart are limited to searching for independent companies by location and sector. However, there is no doubt that the online community will continue to grow. As it starts to gain traction, an increasingly sophisticated platform will allow for more tailored results.

BuySmart is a london-based company founded by James Bryant and Laura Pulford. Sadly, Laura (James’s fiancee) passed away late last year. Bryant hopes to make her proud and believes that this platform has the potential to have a big impact on the UK economy. Bryant has said that “individuals are increasingly looking for brands with authentic values, and there has been an increase in companies starting up to meet that demand.” He went on to say that “we believe that most people buy from major brands and chains simply because it’s easier. Our goal is to raise awareness of just how many innovative UK businesses there are, often on your doorstep, and introduce them to our members.”
