President Trump Stared At The Solar Eclipse Without Protective Glasses

Weeks before the highly anticipated total solar eclipse was to occur, scientists and journalists took care to inform the public about the dangers of looking at the event without protective glasses. It is now well-known by many that peering at a solar eclipse without glasses burns the retinas and may cause serious damage. One individual who didn’t heed this advice, however, was U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to a press release sent out to journalists shortly before the eclipse, President Trump planned to watch the “total eclipse from the Truman Balcony [of the White House] with the First Lady.” And that he did.

To be fair, Trump initially had protective glasses on. After reporters showed up, however, he flashed a thumbs up, took his glasses off, then stared at the “once in a lifetime” event without the gear. According to reports, one aide shouted at him, “Don’t look!”

Judging by the footage, it’s not likely Trump stared down the solar eclipse for long. This is fortunate, as we’re not sure how he’ll make America great again if he can’t even see.

Considering the Trump administration has developed a reputation of being the most anti-scientific federal government in living memory, it shouldn’t come as a surprise its figurehead ignored scientists’ advice. On another note, it’s surprising the Present showed up for the eclipse at all, considering the same tools which predict climate change (a phenomena he claims is a “hoax”) were used to determine the celestial event.
