Victory! All England Slaughterhouses Must Now Install Cameras

First France mandated that all slaughterhouses must have cameras, then England passed similar legislation. As a result, all facilities which slaughter livestock must now install CCTV as part of the government’s plan to monitor animal welfare.

The BBC reports that the new rules will go into effect over the next year, and Food Standards Agency vets will be in charge of reviewing the footage where livestock are held. Facilities found to be breaking welfare standards could face a criminal investigation or even lose staff licenses. According to Environment Secretary Michael Gove, the proposals will make the UK a “global leader on animal welfare” — and that’s something to applaud.

At present, keepers of animals which are raised solely for their meat must meet animal welfare laws and codes of practice. The guide covers the treatment of livestock, including how they are housed, fed and transported. There are also specifics on how the animals are killed. There will be separate rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for slaughterhouses to follow.

As a result of this new development, the Welsh government is reportedly considering to make CCTV mandatory, as well. the government said it has plans to increase standards for farm animals and domestic pets in England, and will likely do so by implementing similar statutory animal welfare codes.

The new codes were specifically written to reflect modernizing medicine, technology and the latest research and advice from veterinarians. Said Gove, “We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and the actions I am setting out today will reinforce our status as a global leader. As we prepare to leave the EU, these measures provide a further demonstration to consumers around the world that our food is produced to the very highest standards.”

British Veterinary Association (BVA) president Gudrun Ravetz noted that the mandatory CCTV is “essential” to safeguarding animal welfare. “We are particularly pleased to see a commitment to official veterinarians having unrestricted access to footage, which the BVA has been calling for,” he said. “Vets’ independence and unique qualifications help ensure that the UK will continue to have the highest standards of animal health, welfare and food safety.”
