Because humans have a habit of compartmentalizing and organizing information, it is nearly impossible to not judge a stranger upon meeting. Regardless if an assessment is based on body language, the individual’s profession or even the way they dress, it is safe to say preconceived thoughts and beliefs are formed. Though the tendency to judge is normal, it can be detrimental in some ways — and that’s exactly what the following experiment proves.

For the project, six photographers were told to photograph the same man. Each was told a different backstory about the individual, however. One photographer was told the man is a fisherman. Another was informed that he is a self-made millionaire. And, someone else was told he was an ex-convict. In reality, he is none of those things. However, the artists didn’t know that and captured images that appear to be of different individuals.

The results of how the man was portrayed by each photograph is mind-blowing. Watch the video below for yourself:

As EducateInspireChange relays, “A photograph can be such an intimate representation of who we are. It also says a lot about the photographer too.” The experiment sheds light on people’s’ tendency to judge, or at least portray someone’s character based upon previously obtained information and first impressions. Hopefully, the video inspires people to be more conscious of the way they perceive themselves and others.
