Captivating Photos Of People Who Left Civilization And Thrive In The Wild

Some people “escape” to nature on the weekends or, if they’re lucky, a couple of times per week. Others actually live in the wilderness, in self-imposed isolation. Away from populated areas and the influences of modern-day society, they are free to think for themselves and live any way they please.

This is the focus of Russian photographer Danila Tkachenko’s photo series entitled “Escape.” As MyModernMet reports, Tkachenko trekked through the Russian and Ukrainian wilderness to meet hermits and those who have subjected themselves to exile, so he could capture their unique lifestyles.

It is impossible to scroll through the photographs and not question the influence(s) of society. If family, peer groups, mass media and religious institutions hadn’t taught you what to think, how to act, and what to believe, who would you be today? Tkachenko wondered the same, which is why he sought out those who have chosen to leave civilization and the influences of pop culture behind.

He wrote,

“School, work, family – once in this cycle, you are a prisoner of your own position. You should be pragmatic and strong, or become an outcast or a lunatic. How to remain yourself in the midst of this?”
