Dallas Is Currently Building The Biggest Urban Nature Park In America

By Jess Murray Truth Theory

Dallas, Texas is currently planning to build one of the largest urban nature parks in America, putting the city on schedule to become one of the greenest cities in the country.

Reports claim that the new “nature district” will be made up of 10,000 acres, which includes 7,000 acres of the Great Trinity Forest. Designed by Michael Van Valkenburg Associates, the Trinity River Park hopes to bring life back into the Dallas floodplain, turning it into a beautiful, green recreation space.

Once completed, the Trinity River Park will provide a space for visitors to access playgrounds, lawns and riverside trails. Additionally 1,000 additional acres of the Great Trinity Forest have already been turned into a golf club, the Texas Horse Park, and a nature centre for children and event spaces to take place, called the Trinity River Audubon Centre.

The crucial and main aim of the building of the park is for the intricately planned design to enhance the natural beauty of the area, whilst minimising flooding damage in Dallas at the same time. According to Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, they have been working with government engineers to ensure the accurate infrastructure of the floodplain, which means that the park is transformed “from a natural disaster into a breathtaking spectacle.”

Alongside these green plans, Dallas is currently undergoing another ambitious green project called the Trinity Strand Trail. This trail will connect 73 miles of trails together. The initial two and a half miles of this trail opened in 2015, whilst plans are currently in place to add the remaining miles to the ever-growing trail, and enable it to be connected to the existing Katy Trail with the Trinity River. The building of the Trinity River Park was given a huge boost in late October last year, when the project received a $50 million donation. Dallas Mayor, Mike Rawlings, said that the park will “redefine Dallas for the 21st century”, hopefully encouraging other cities around the country to consider their green areas, and what more can be done to help the natural environment with the space that they have, for future generations.
