An online video has gone viral showing the moment when a woman regains her sense of hearing, after spending the majority of her life almost completely deaf.
Cora Lutes, who lives in Norfolk, Virginia, lost her hearing at the young age of two, and consequently spent most of her life relying on the use of hearing aids. However, her condition progressively got a lot worse until the point when she was told that having surgery was her only option to improve it. The surgery was to receive a cochlear implant, which is a small hearing device that would be fitted under the skin behind Cora’s ear.
Cora’s husband, James, captured the moment that the surgery was completed and Cora could hear his voice. James then uploaded the video which very quickly received over five million views. James writes that when he first met Cora she was still able to hear, but “after I joined the Navy she slowly got worse and lost her hearing completely”.
Despite the condition getting worse, James stood by his wife, and filmed her as her new hearing device was turned on during the two minute video clip. Cora could initially only hear a loud squeaking noise, but can then be seen smiling happily when she could begin to pick up the doctor’s voice, although it sounded a little distorted as she got used to the new device.
The doctor explained to Cora that it would take time for her to get used to and adjust to the use of the device, after which James was encouraged to start speaking to his wife. He asked, “How’s my voice sound?”, to which Cora laughs with utter joy. As James continues to repeat the question Cora begins to respond, claiming that his voice is loud.
As she continues to laugh, she is also amazed that she can hear properly again, stating, “It’s amazing!” before covering her face with overcome emotion and happiness that she can hear her husband’s voice.
