Facebook recently announced they will be “Addressing Hoaxes and Fake News” In something which at first glance may look harmless. In a statement they have said-
“We believe in giving people a voice and that we cannot become arbiters of truth ourselves, so we’re approaching this problem carefully. We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations.”
However when you dig a little deeper into the details all is not as it seems. You see fake news was not an issue before Hillary Clinton lost the election and now all of a sudden she has blamed her poor campaign decisions on “Fake News” while ironically sharing a genuine fake news story of her own by blaming Russia for emails being released that damaged her campaign, with the emails in question showing that she was actually collaborating with mainstream media to create fake news to help her win the election (confusing I know, but reread that sentence and it will make sense).
The hypocrisy of this is almost comical and if it was not for the real world implications of suppressing freedom of speech, then we could all have a laugh about it. However this is a smear campaign on the positive media that is out trying to bring honest, solution (love) based media.
Facebook have planned to collaborate with media organisations and international fact-checking networks which include ABC News, Snopes, PolitiFact and Factcheck.org, working under the guidance of Poynter, a nonprofit school for journalism.
The problem is some of these organisations can follow a specific narrative and some things that are breaking ideas could be flagged as “fake news”. A good example would be that of hemp/cannabis, something that many have touted as a miracle plant for many medicinal, agricultural and economic uses. The mainstream media, pharmaceutical industry and lobbyists attempted to shut this down and discredit it, but eventually, due mostly to independent media, it was found out to be true.
Also there is the subject of who determines what is real or not? Some people believe that the human form also has spirit, if we speak about this will it be flagged as fake news? Some people want to question the legitimacy of the government’s actions and plans for the future, does this fall under fake news? Some believe that things fall out of the realm of modern day science, is this fake news?
How can anyone, especially a group that follow a specific narrative that goes against the belief of a huge portion of the global population tell us what is fake and what it real. Controversial subjects such as 9/11, the corruption in the financial system and wars for profit, which have been brought to light by independent news sources will be shut down and silenced- we cannot allow this to happen.
This is a bigger deal than many are giving it credit and I am sure many who follow the mainstream narrative are completely missing its importance. But this is the equivalent the Nazi’s book burning, when under Hitlers reign they decided to burn the books that went against the conversations that spoke out against the Nazi regime.
We have been working on a solution to combat fake news too, much of which is brought to us by the mainstream, but not just fake news, also negative fear based news that leaves us feeling hopeless. The Conscious Media Coalition is that solution and is tackling the problem’s presented by Facebook in two ways. By providing a single website which you can visit on a regular basis for trusted, independent news sources, and by providing an alternative Social Media platform.
The Conscious Media Coalition is bringing together trusted and credible independent news organisations to work together to ensure the truth is made freely available.
Incorporating Coeo (the “GeoSocial Network for Conscious Changemakers”), The Conscious Media Coalition is providing a new social networking platform which not only provides an uncensored space for collaboration but also incorporates unique tools to connect you with like-minded people in your area and form grassroots local action groups.
What you can do:
- Stay informed. Don’t miss the stories that Facebook doesn’t want you to see. Visit www.consciousmediacoalition.com/ regularly to get an unfiltered feed of trusted, independent news.
- Join the Coeo GeoSocial Network via The Conscious Media Coalition as an alternative to Facebook. Not only will you find a space for online collaboration, but you will also find tools to connect you to other Conscious Changemakers in your local area.
