A cafe in Israel has decided to give a 50 percent discount to tables mixing Jewish and Arab diners, in an attempt to ease racial tension, as dozens of people have died in Israeli-Palestinian violence this month.
Kobi Tzafrir, who owns the Humus Bar, initially posted the offer on Facebook-
Which read- “Scared of Arabs? Scared of Jews? With us there are no Arabs! But also no Jews … With us there are only human beings! And real, wonderful Arab hummus! And great Jewish falafel! And free refills on all hummus dishes if you’re Arab, Jewish, Christian, Indian, et cetera … Special discount: 50% off on hummus dishes for a table where Jews and Arabs are sitting together!”
Tzafrir told Al Jazeera he wanted to show that there are lots of Arabs and Jews who were not taking part in the violent events reported in the media.
“We want to show that we’re all human beings, just like each other, not so different,” he said over the phone.
Tzafrir has said at least three tables have taken him up on the offer of discounted humus after the post. But there were a lot more mixed tables with customers refusing the offer and paying full price to show the support of what he was doing.
“A lot of customers now say they have seen the post and they tell me they’ve come to support the idea. Some Arabs come with Jewish friends, some Jewish families come alone. They’re all saying good things.”
In the post, Tzafrir said the offer would be valid for just a few days. But after the great response he is now considering keeping the discount, “maybe forever”.
They have now called upon all restaurants over the world to take part in their “peace movement” in an attempt to bring different races together.
Due to the recent conflict which broke out earlier this month at least 44 Palestinians and 8 Israelis have lost their lives, so let’s hope this small gesture of solidarity can go at least some of the way to more peace and kindness in the area.
