Ikea has recently created an innovative way of providing those who don’t have space for a garden with a green plant patch of their own. The flatpack garden is designed with city dwellers in mind who have limited space. Named Growroom, the DIY garden is nine feet tall and sphere shaped, providing ample space for growing plants, vegetables and herbs, in an area where seating space can be enjoyed with family and friends.

The creative new design by the Swedish furniture giant consists of just 17 sheets of plywood along with 500 screws, and can be put together using only a screwdriver and hammer. The plywood does not come pre-cut, meaning that the do-it-yourself enthusiasts will need a CNC machine, laser cutter or table saw. The limited list of supplies needed to construct the Growroom makes it low-cost to construct, and means that it can be assembled in the comfort of your own space without needing to manoeuvre it after.

Once completed, the structure is 2.8m by 2.5m, with plenty of space inside for people to sit and enjoy some relaxation surrounded by plants and flowers. The designers are Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum, who both work for the Space10  design project in Copenhagen, Denmark, which is supported by Ikea. They believe that the Growroom represents a future where people are more conscious of where their food comes from, and want to grow more healthy food locally, which the Growroom allows. In a recent blog post, they wrote: “The challenge is that traditional farming takes up a lot of space and space is a scarce resource in our urban environments.”

The Growroom has just a small footprint, and is designed with the added prospect of being extended vertically, which is great for those with limited outside space. The overlapping sections of the structure mean that the growing plants can get light at every level of the garden. The price of the Growroom is currently unknown, but has been said to be fitting with other reasonably priced Ikea products.
