U.S. Soda Consumption Falls To The Lowest Level In 30 Years

Sales of once extremely popular fizzy drinks have declined for the 11th year in a row in the US.

The total volume of the drinks sold by PepsiCo and Coca Cola declined by 0.9% in 2014, which then increased to a decline of 1.2% in 2015. Within this percentage consumption decrease of the numerous drinks produced by the top companies, the three most popular beverages were amongst those that showed a decline, according to a new report from industry tracker Beverage Digest.

The report also showed that the yearly consumption of carbonated soft drinks per person was at the lowest that it has ever been since 1985.

PepsiCo suffered the biggest downturn with a 3.1% decline of sales, with a major reason for the decline across the fizzy drink companies pointing to consumers seeking healthier alternatives, such as juices and flavoured water.

Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke each reported declines in sales of over 5%, due to consumers becoming increasingly wary of the ingredients in these drinks, and the health implications linked with the consumption of certain ingredients, including artificial sweeteners.

As a reaction to the steep declines, the companies are seeking positive changes to their drinks in an attempt to maintain their consumers. These include smaller cans and bottles, although this has also been negatively received as these smaller sizes of the same beverage carry a higher price per ml.

Despite this, the report by Beverage Digest did show some successes. These included both Sprite and Fanta, who are owned by Coke, and whose sales showed an increase of 3.3% for Sprite, and 8.3% for Fanta.

This is seen to be owed to Sprite’s relaunch of special cans featuring inspirational quotes from hip-hop artists, which seemed to grab headlines.

However, brands of bottled water showed huge inclines in 2o15, with brands such as Dasani, Aquafina and Poland Spring showing inclines ranging from 6.5% to 11.4%.

Perhaps the fact that we are now a lot more aware of the harmful ingredients that go into beverages, and what this can do to our health, is finally starting to make a real impact in an increasingly more knowledgable world.
