Did you know? More people die from air pollution every year than AIDs and malaria combined! While this statistic might seem unthinkable, it’s a tragic reality that is witnessed every day, all around the world.

In fact, the World Health Organization calls air pollution the world’s largest single environmental health risk. China – population 1.35 billion – has one of the highest rates of air pollution in the world. To protect themselves, citizens often walk the streets with masks to prevent contaminants from being inhaled. However, cloth masks do little to stop toxic particles from being consumed, which is why businessman Carlton Solle and his wife, Hazel, invented a product that can do the job.

On Monday, Bioscarf launched its new website and unveiled its revolutionary scarfs. The company’s press release explains that when fitted properly, each Bioscarf can help protect its user from many of the common airborne contaminants associated with air pollution. The fashionable product has an N95 rating, which means that it is capable of blocking non-oil based airborne particles 3.0 microns in size or larger. The product’s lining is made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET water bottles and its signature labels are made out of recycled PVC.

Solle was inspired to invent the Bioscarf after a business trip to the Hubei Province in China caused him to become ill. After returning to his home in Georgia, he was informed by his doctor that the sickness was a result of air pollution. The physician informed him that the only solution was to use a mask.

Solle, who is passionate about preserving the environment, began to research various ways he could not only protect himself but potentially help the millions of people who suffer from air pollution all around the world. When Hazel was informed of the idea, she quickly envisioned a plan to invent a scarf that can filter airborne contaminants.

”I was looking for a way to protect myself on the road without having to wear one of those masks. I mentioned it to my wife. She came up with the idea and brought it to life,” co-founder Carlton Solle said.

The product was designed to give its user protection right when they need it. So, whether one is out for a ride, on a bus or a plane, or just out on the street, the Bioscarf gives them comfort and protection wherever – and whenever – it’s required.

“Experts say that over 2 billion kids around the world are breathing toxic air and nobody is talking about it,” co-founder Hazel Solle said. “It’s time to not only raise awareness about this issue but to more importantly give many of the people at risk who don’t have the means to protect themselves something to help them combat air pollution on a daily basis.”

The company has pledged to donate one Bioscarf to an individual affected by air pollution for every scarf that is sold. At present, the visionaries are working hard to transport and donate a large part of the company’s first production run to Standing Rock protestors who are braving frigid temperatures near Cannon Ball, ND. Additionally, Bioscarfs will be donated to victims of the fires which presently rage in the southern part of the U.S.
