What are dreams? If you ask the dictionary it will tell you that they are “a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep.”

But dreams are not thoughts, at least not the kind of thoughts you would think in your day to day activities. I am sure you have had one of them moments in your life when you awaken from a really strange or profound dream and question what on earth just happened, thoughts do not produce that kind of effect.

Dreams are very image centred, but at times in your dreams you can have things going through your mind that you have never seen or experienced before, it is almost as if dreams create a new reality that didn’t exist before.

We can try to box up dreams in the realms of science, but the truth is there is very little understanding from the scientific community of what dreams actually are.

Dreams have been linked cross culturally over the centuries to have spiritual and prophetic meaning-

In ancient Egypt dream interpretation has its first written record at around 1350 B.C. – although modern findings think it is much earlier.

It was the ancient Egyptians belief that in our dreams our eyes are opened. With their word for dream being rswt, which means “to be awake”. Which was written with a symbol that represented an open eye.

Although there is no one way that dreams were interpreted across Native American culture it is obvious that their dreams were generally considered as a highly significant form of reality and they were often used as a form guidance.

In Mayan culture, dreams were considered as sacred. They were thought of as a means of connecting with Ajaw, which means “lord” and their ancestors for guidance. They were thought to reveal your destiny, teach you and connect you to your spirit so you can leave your physical body and astral travel.

Most ancient and many current belief systems hold dreams in high regard as a connection to something significant, but what could your dreams actually mean? All dreams are different and it is hard to box them up without looking at all the fine details, but here are 11 common interpretations of what a specific type of dream could mean for you:

Abandonment-

When abandoned in our dreams it is a sign that we need to let go of limiting beliefs, past feelings and characteristics that are hindering your growth.

A more literal interpretation of this could be that you have a fear of being deserted, betrayed or abandoned. This could stem from a recent loss or the fear of losing a loved one.

Adventure-

Dreaming about adventurer shows that you could need more adventure in your life. That you are longing for some variety and excitement. It could also mean you are too absorbed with your dreams and goals and you need to take time out to acknowledge those who helped you reach where you are now.

Burial-

To dream you are being buried suggests that you are being not being taken seriously or are being stifled in some way. That you are feeling helpless and/or trapped.

Death-

Dreaming that you have died symbolizes a rebirth, transformation, self-discovery and positive development in your life. This is a transitional phase in which you are becoming more connected spiritually. Although quite a dark subject, death is actually considered a positive omen.

Telling Lies-

Dreaming you are telling lies shows you are trying to deceive yourself and go against your intuition, natural instincts and/or values. If you dream you are lying ask yourself what are you hiding from yourself and/or from others.

Crowd-

When you dream that you are part of a crowd, this suggests that you are in need of some space. That you need to take out some time for solitude, to reflect on your current situation. It can also imply a lack of individuality.  Maybe you feel your opinion doesn’t matter.

Kissing-

To dream of a kissing shows love, affection, tranquility, harmony, and feeling content. This dream also symbolizes young love and a new romance. If already in a relationship the dream could also be telling you that you need to be a little more romantic in your current relationship.

Sex-

Dreaming about sex relates to the merging of different parts of yourself. It is representative of psychological completion. It is telling you that you need to incorporate parts of the partner you dreamed about into your own character. How was the sex in the dream? Was it passionate? Fast? Slow? Wild? The dream sex shows aspects of yourself you desire to express. Another way to interpret could be that it is your libido’s way of telling you have gone too long without. It could also represent repressed sexual desires and your needs for physical and emotional love.

Moon-

Dreaming of the moon is representative of the hidden and mysterious side of yourself. It is often associated with mystery and intuition. The moon can also signify changes in your moods.

Barefoot-

Dreaming you are barefoot is representative of a playful attitude, being relaxed and carefree. It can also represent poverty, a lack of mobility,  low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. It may also mean you are dealing with issues concerning your identity.

Goodbye-

When you dream that you are saying goodbye to someone this represents an end to your worries, to a relationship/s and/or a new chapter in your life.

Dreaming someone is saying goodbye to you suggests you are finding yourself and entering a chapter of your life.
