Finding The Balance Between Your Dark & Light Qualities

The spiritual journey is one scattered with a great deal of emotions. You will have moments when you feel euphoric, you will have moments of despair when you start to question what it is that you stand for and there will be moments when you are fully focused and moving in the right direction in your life.

It is an all-around experience, it is light and dark, yin and yang and you will experience a full range of emotions on your journey. Finding comfort with this fact and being prepared will help you to deal with the spiritual experience, although in some cases being unprepared is an inevitable part of your awakening.

I have found in my own personal experience that there have been many moments of certainty, in which you are sure you are moving in the right direction, only to find out down the road that you were totally lost in this moment of certainty.

This is attachment, when you identify yourself with a path, a way of life, a person, a group or a thing. The problem with attachment is it can cause a lot of pain if you have to detach from the thing you associate with so deeply, even if it makes logical sense to do so.

The spiritual journey is like a mirror and once you are on the path you are forced to look deep within. Not everything you see looking back at you will be light, but it is important to embrace all areas on the spectrum if you are ever going to find true peace.

Discomfort, pain and suffering are all an inevitable part of the human experience and if you can look at these experiences without judgement and the need to slap a label of positive or negative on them you can really start to embrace the qualities of all different states of mind.

Once in tune with our mind, body and soul we really are made aware by signals of what it is we need to do in a given moment. Life moves and flows like a swinging pendulum, for every intense exertion of energy we need an equal moment of rest. If someone seems to be lazy, unmotivated or in a lot of inaction, you can be assured that this person is working hard in one area of their life, usually their over active thoughts.

The real key to finding balance within your own world is to get in tune with yourself, know your cycles, rest when rest is needed and exert energy when it is in abundance. So many of us are walking around these days with our cycles totally out of sync, a good example is that of someone who can’t sleep at night, but is exhausted during the day.

Awareness is the key to a healthy life- some call it being in the moment, some in the now, other expanding your consciousness. I like to call it being present, and once you find this presence you start to notice your cycles more clearly.

To become more present you need to practice, this at first needs to be a conscious practice such as meditation or yoga, but the beauty of when you practice being present for an extended period of time is that it becomes ingrained in you and part of your automatic unconscious makeup.

Although it can take some time to find this level of internal consciousness, we all have the ability to do so and once you do it your body will let you know of any imbalance you are facing in a given moment.

Being in tune with yourself will also let you act according to where you sit in your cycle. Sometimes we are quiet, low energy and reflective, sometimes we are full of life, very sociable and energetic. Sometimes we are somewhere in between.

Culturally we idolise high energy and productive, but demonise low energy and reflective, but the truth is all different states serve different purposes. So next time you are faced with a feeling of low energy you don’t necessarily have to snap out of it and try to motivate yourself, but try to ask yourself firstly- what is your body/mind/soul trying to tell you and secondly what is it that you can achieve in this state.

The mind/body/soul is a complex machine which talks to you in a language that you need to learn to listen to, so try working with it instead of against it. Listen to the language of the universe, it tells you all you need to know! Much love, Luke
